Drug Addiction and Alcoholism; A Treatable Illness

Drug addiction and alcohol addiction are comparable to chronic illnesses like diabetes, asthma, and hypertension, and should be treated as such, according to an article published in a year 2000 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Authors Thomas McLellan, Ph.D., and Herbert D. Kleber, M.D., conducted a literature review of those illnesses, revealing that there are underlying similarities between drug addiction, alcohol addiction and chronic diseases. Yet, say the researchers, drug addiction is typically treated as if it is an acute condition. Altering perceptions to think of drug addiction as a chronic illness may change the way it is treated and insured.
The researchers found that drug addiction and alcoholism shares many of the characteristics of other chronic illnesses. In the area of genetic heritability, for example, studies of monozygotic and dizygotic twins have found heritability estimates of .25 to .50 for hypertension; .80 for type 2 and .30 for type 1 diabetes; and .36 to .70 for asthma. Heritability estimates for the drug addictions are similar, ranging from .34 for heroin dependence, .55 for alcoholism, .52 for marijuana dependence, and .61 for dependence on cigarettes.
Typically, both medical professionals and the general public view drug abuse as voluntary activities. That people choose to use drugs seems to set drug addiction and alcohol adidiction apart from other chronic illnesses. Yet, there are many chronic illnesses in which voluntary choice affects initiation and maintenance of disease. Salt sensitivity, obesity, stress level, and physical inactivity, all within voluntary control, are important factors in the development of hypertension.
Drug addiction and alcoholism also resembles other chronic illnesses in regard to treatment response. The course that an drug addiction takes if left untreated is an important issue in this regard. Studies comparing treated and untreated populations of addicts have typically shown that untreated, addictions do not remit.
At this time there is no reliable “cure” for drug addiction and alcohol addiction. Typically, addicts who remain in addiction treatment and who attend follow-up have superior outcomes compared with those who do not. Effective Treatment for Drug Addiction – The Time is Now to Change
Strictly speaking, an addiction is a chronic strain and need on that the body develops towards a substance, drug, food or chemical in order to feel normal again. At times this is not as simple as it sounds; what the body deciphers as necessary for life may itself be the very thing that destroys it. Take for instance; drug addiction (which sometimes clinically differs from drug dependency) happens when the body craves the ingestion of a drug in order to diminish its heightened sense of anxiety and when this drug of choice is ingested, inhaled or injected into the blood stream, a sense of calm and serene satisfaction blankets the body and the craving subsides. Drug addiction to such potent drugs as heroin, opium, cocaine and methamphetamines, is one of the most dangerous and potent killers in today’s society and there are various ways in which it can be treated but before we examine that, let us explore why it starts. There are both physical and psychological reasons.
Most drug addicts get into drug use after experiencing some traumatic experience such as the death of a loved one, an accident, the loss of an important relationship or even after learning of the existence of a terminal illness. The addict then goes into a state of denial where he or she needs an additive in order to “cope” with life. Initially, the addict rationalizes that he or she is able to keep the drug usage under control. Sometimes the drug, such as methamphetamine, will promise the user an ecstatic high that blankets the present pain of living and offers a thrill that surpasses all else that the addict has ever known and in so doing attempts to numb reality. Once the addict has solidly settled into regular drug use, the body chemical balance is altered to where it needs the drug in ever increasing amounts in order to produce the same high. At this point, the addict is overwhelmed by feelings of helplessness and no longer has any control. It is at this juncture that he or she needs immediate help. Let us examine the treatment for drug addiction.
Social treatment
There are those of the school of thought that in order to transition the addict to full recovery, the root cause of the addiction has to be tackled. In other words, the hurt, pain and disappointment that caused the addict to fall into addictive behavior has to be addressed. This is where family and friends come in handy in loving and supporting the addict back to life. It is at this point that the addict needs a support system. Attending an addicts’ recovery group such as the 12-step program also serves the same purpose.
Anti-addictive drugs
The same way there exists drugs which induce an addiction, doctors and pharmacists have also formulated drugs that combat that same addiction. These drugs such as methadone, attempt to restore the body’s original chemical balance so that the addictive drug loses its hold on the addict. One downside to these anti-addictive drugs is that they are themselves addictive if taken without a prescription. These need to be taken with caution and intelligently.

What is required is the determination to get rid of this disease it is always possible as the word impossible does not exist in today’s modernized world. After all the patience and hard wok if the person gets convinced the initial and the most important step is to search for the most appropriate rehab center.  Mild-mannered addiction is very normal for most of the people who intake alcohol or smoke once in a while because they are not addicted to it. It’s once in a while for them. Once it is observed that addiction is ruling one’s life, one need to consider the matter seriously. Addiction to any thing not only disturbs the individual but it affects the family to a great extent. An addicted person may occasionally act in a much unexpected manner and even the health of the person may hinder his daily routine. Howsoever, one could easily select from amongst the various programs available at the various drug rehabilitation centers all over and thus health is slowly recovered.

Drug Addiction and Recovery Guide

Alcoholism and drug addiction are quite common in today’s society. Some estimates have shown that over twenty percent of the United States population battles with some form of drug addiction, alcohol ism or substance abuse problem. Who Does Drug Addiction and Alcoholism Affect?
Alcoholism and drug addiction are quite common in today’s society. Some estimates have shown that over twenty percent of the United States population battles with some form of drug addiction, alcohol ism or substance abuse problem
Drug addiction and alcoholism bring only destruction, sorrow, and pain, it affects not only the addict, but also the people in his/her life. Hurting friends and family, drug addiction also permeates professional settings. Employees with drug addiction or alcohol dependency problems hurt businesses and create aggravating and possibly unsafe work environments.
Many untrue myths on the origins of drug addiction and alcoholism continue to circulate. Some attempt to pinpoint the social groups most affected. Others attempt to recognize drug addiction and alcoholism as an illness or a moral defect. These falsehoods perpetuate unnecessary confusion, fear, and shame. Drug addiction or alcoholism does not appear in any particular component of society. It affects every socio-economic class, ethnicity, and gender. There is no reason to label drug addicts with untrue stereotypes, and there is no need to fear them. At some point everyone struggles with life’s hurdles and needs help from others. Drug addicts and alcoholics are no different from anyone else. No one chooses drug addiction or alcoholism; rather, drug addiction and alcoholism steals from him/her.
How Can Drug Addiction and Alcohol Addiction Be Identified?
Drug addiction and alcohol addiction carry warning signs with them. Some of these are listed below:
Red or dilated eyes
Slurred speech
Cold or sweaty hands
Difficulties concentrating
Moody, impatient, dangerous, and/or violent behavior
Extreme periods of energy (e.g., constant talking) and/or fatigue
Paranoia
Sudden or decreasing disregard in personal appearance or hygiene
Sudden change in friends
Dishonesty
Depression
Well over half of drug users work, and two out of five have taken an illicit drug at their work site. Unsurprisingly, almost half of work related accidents involve drug addiction or alcoholism. Substance abuse, drug addiction and alcoholism on the job manifests in many ways:
Decreases the quality and/or speed of work.
Constant absences and/or tardiness (especially right before a weekend or holiday break and right after payday): Researchers find that drugs cause over sixty percent of work absences.
Often leaving work early
Lengthening breaks
Talking more on the phone
Stealing company supplies and/or profits
How to Help a Drug Addict or Alcoholic?
Drug addiction and alcohol addiction are treatable. The question is ,why do so many recovering addicts return to the same behaviors? Posing a severe problem in and of itself, addiction rarely develops on its own. Drug addiction and substance abuse most often result from inadequate coping of conscious and unconscious issues. Problems stem from unresolved childhood traumas and personal issues. Dependency, denial merely enlarges the initial denial. Substance abusers require extensive patience, compassion, and sensitivity to treat and to heal. For this reason, addicts may need constant encouragement to pursue addiction treatment options and drug rehab.
Know the Signs of Drug Addiction and Alcohol Addiction
Know how to recognize drug addiction and alcohol addiction Identify warning signs. Become familiar with strategies for handling someone with a possible drug addition or alcohol addiction.
Speak with the Individual
This can be difficult. Fears of being wrong often deter people from approaching a possible addict. However, it is better to talk to a person and be wrong then to say nothing and allow a drug addiction or alcohol addiction to continue. Always broach the topic in an unthreatening manner.
Offer Guidance and Suggestions
While demonstrating concern is essential, it is important not to come on too strong. A substance-abuse situation is a delicate matter. While drug addiction may be apparent, all other issues, which contributed to the present condition, are not. Sobriety can never be achieved unless an addict takes charge of his/her own situation and decides to change his/her lifestyle.
Support and Compassion
Even if professionals delicately ask about a possible drug addiction, the addict may still refuse help. Substance abuse and its initial/current life problems create massive feelings of helplessness. They may not feel capable of stopping their drug addiction or alcohol addiction, and they might not trust others, even those that want to help. Nonetheless, with persistent patience and compassion, a professional can communicate his/her sincerity; and eventually, the addict may gain the necessary trust and courage for drug rehab or alcohol rehab.
Addiction Recovery in Alcohol Rehab and Drug Rehab
People suffering from drug addiction and alcohol addiction need both benefits of individualized care and drug rehab and alcohol rehab. Individualized addiction treatment is essential for enduring sobriety. While symptoms may be common, causes are never completely shared. Being an individual automatically implies that life is experienced uniquely. People require different addiction treatment therapies and time in a drug rehab or alcohol rehab to stabilize. Drug addiction and alcohol addiction attacks from all angles and progressively weakens a person into sequestered parts. Addiction treatment programs, drug rehab and alcohol rehab naturally reunites body, mind, and spirit into an enduring whole person again.
A drug rehab program or alcohol rehab program should offer a variety of specified addiction treatment. Incorporated with individual chemical dependency counseling, state-of-the-art methods of psychotherapy and hypnotherapy enable people to heal from anxiety and memories which often cause the self-medicating substance abuse. Family counseling repairs the relationships contributing to and brought on by addiction. Life purpose and spiritual counseling enable people to embrace their true identities and to move positively forward.
Rejuvenating all components of human life, comprehensive alcohol rehab and drug rehab offers further treatments including:
– Physical Training – Massage/Bodywork – Acupuncture – Nutritional Advisement – Yoga/Music/Arts Treatment – Image Therapy – Peaceful and Soothing Environment
Complete drug rehab or alcohol rehab programs develop further specialty therapies to address specific client needs. A team closely works to create the best individualized addiction treatment possible. Most importantly, all activities focus directly on healing the initial problems that caused the drug addiction or alcoholism.
Professional help is needed to eradicate drug addiction or alcoholism Professionals play critical roles in the detection and recovery of substance abuse/addiction problems. If you are looking for a quality and effective drug rehab or alcohol rehab, go to www.lakeviewhealth.com or call a national addiction treatment helpline at 1-800-511-9225 and they will assist you in locating a drug rehab or alcohol rehab in your local area.

Prescription Drug Addiction – Which Method of Drug Detox is Best?
Choosing the right drug detox can mean the difference between success and failure.
When looking for help for themselves or a loved one with a prescription drug problem, people are often unsure which detox program is best. Choosing the right program could mean the difference between success and failure in overcoming prescription drug addiction. Different types of drug detox programs are available and each one has its advantages and drawbacks.
For most people drug detox is just the start of full rehabilitation. It is primarily a method of withdrawal, and does not address why the person became addicted in the first place – for that you need a successful drug rehab program. Nevertheless, withdrawal is the necessary first step to rehab and to get someone with a prescription drug addiction problem to even agree to quit, it is often necessary to find a drug detox program that can effectively handle prescription drug addiction detox, is safe, and is as comfortable for the addicted person as possible.
Some drug detox programs simply provide a setting where the person is kept away from all drugs, fed, housed, and watched over to ensure they don’t encounter any serious medical problems. They are basically withdrawing ’cold turkey’, with nothing to relieve the pain or other withdrawal symptoms. For many with a prescription drug addiction problem, this type of drug detox is very hard on the body, and very traumatic.
Another type of drug detox program basically amounts to substituting a different drug for the one the person is already taking. The person arrives at the detox center, is given a drug that helps relieve the symptoms of withdrawal, and leaves the center on the substitute drug – possibly chained to it forever. If they want to get off the new drug, they may well have to go through another drug detox. This is obviously not a good choice for someone with a prescription drug addiction as they have just replaced one prescription for another.
Then we have ’rapid detox’, promoted as the fastest route. You arrive at the facility, usually a hospital, and, after medical examination and other preparations, are put under general anesthetic for between four and six hours – the person is basically ’out’ while a strong drug is pumped through their system.
The most talked about aspect of the rapid detox method is the fact that you are technically done within hours. However, recovery from the anesthetic and physical stress put on the body can take several days, and the person is likely to continue to have side effects and symptoms for weeks. In fact, most people leave rapid detox centers on medications designed to handle the after-effects of the detox.
The best method of detoxing from prescription drugs is the gradual withdrawal technique. The person checks into a medically-supervised, comfortable facility where they are helped through withdrawal by the use of drugs that help alleviate the symptoms. This differs from the ’substitute drug’ method as the person is given the withdrawal drugs only for a short period of time, and is no longer taking that drug when they leave.
There’s no quick fix for drug addiction. The first step is a drug detox program that can successfully deal with prescription drug addiction. Then finish up with a drug rehab program that addresses the reasons behind the addiction. With these steps done, the person can get their life back.

We all know it is a major issue with a cross section of people affected by drug addiction. Treatment of drug addiction is a combination of traditional, spiritual and the medical way which allows the patient to combat drug addiction. Treatments for drug addictions are always administered in facilities like clinics, hospitals, drug rehab centers etc. in the presence of trained physicians in administering addiction medicine and doctors who are specialized in treating addiction related cases. It may seem that treatment of drugs is very simple, but in fact treatment centers have to be ultra cautious with their patients who enroll in drug rehab or treatment programs. The first step of any treatment for drug addiction is detoxification. The effect of consuming drugs like Marijuana, Cocaine is that the toxic remnants of these drugs are left behind in the human body. The detoxification process detoxifies or removes all these toxic remnants from the body. Detoxification in itself is a simple process but it can get complicated in cases where the drug addict has a history of consuming drugs for a long time. Post the detoxification, the actual treatment for drug rehabilitation is prescribed by the doctor or the physician. Normally, these tests last about two weeks and may require the patient to either choose an in-house residential program or an outpatient program. Cases where the person is found to be a heavy opiate or has been consuming drugs like heroin, cocaine for a long time, an FDA approved drug called methadone is used for the treatment. The process of treatment of such cases may take longer and it may take up to 6 months to a year for the person to complete the treatment. That said, the patients who undergo such treatments will see the benefits of the treatment coming to them a year after the treatment is over. A good treatment of drug addiction cases involves individual and group counseling and group therapy in addition to the medical treatment. Many companies/centers/clinics offer treatment for drug addiction. With most of them affordably priced, drug addiction treatment is almost becoming a necessity for all those who have a history of drug addiction.Remember, treatment for drug addiction is not mandatory for a person. But in order to save a lot of your efforts trying to grapple with the serious negative effects which accompany drug addiction, you are well advised to take a treatment for drug addiction.

The Physical and Emotional Effects of Alcoholism

Download – Royalty Free Stock Photographyfrom © Dreamstime.com
Alcoholism has emerged as one of the major social problems these days. Not only family but state Governments too are expressing their deep concerns over the growing rate of Alcoholism. Reports say if the rate of alcoholism continued in the same manner it would adversely affect the overall productivity of a country. Alcoholism is a serious and terrible social problem because it has the potential to adversely affect the physical as well as the mental status of a person.
One of the major problems with alcoholism and drug addiction is that people slowly become dependent upon these substances and it becomes pretty tough to get rid of those. Even if they are willing to leave this habit they won’t be able to do so and they will experience some withdrawal symptoms. The duration and effect of withdrawal symptoms can range from a few days to weeks. The degree of its severity also ranges from mild to serious and in some cases it may lead to death.
Alcoholism and drug addiction is a substance abuse problem that is repeated and excessive. This substance is used to create effects or imagined effects. As a person becomes more and more addicted and sinks deeper into these substances they could experience abnormal physical and mental behaviors like mood swings, abnormal social and communication behavior, personality changes and many others. When we talk about physical changes it may include liver damage and failure, redness and rashes in eyes, dry skin, dry lips, forgetfulness and many others.
Viewing its long term impact on the overall personality of a person it is essential to know what physical and emotional effects alcoholism could bring in and what should be done in case you are in the same trap. With this article we have come-up with certain facts that could decipher what physical and mental effects does alcoholism brings in.
Gastrointestinal problems: The first system that gets adversely affected by alcoholism is the gastrointestinal system or commonly called as digestive system. A higher concentration of alcohol in body leads to weakened liver and ultimately to a weak digestive system.
Cardio vascular complications: Experts are of the opinion that a higher concentration of alcohol in human body also has negative impact on our respiratory and cardio vascular system as it may leads to many cardio vascular complication including hypertension and cardiomyopathy.
Weakened immunity system: Immune system is one of the most important systems in human body, it is our defense mechanism, and it recognizes foreign antigens and chemicals in the body and elicits some defense mechanism to get rid of the antigen. However regular alcohol intake could affect our immune system negatively and ultimately leads to a weakened immune system.
Infections and infectious diseases: Continuous intake of alcohol could leads to serious infections including pneumonia and tuberculosis which could adversely affect our respiratory system as a whole.
Nervous system disorders: Experts have opined that excessive level of alcohol in body could also damage our peripheral and central nervous system that could result into many nervous system disorders and much cognitive impairment.
Impotency: Alcoholism not only affects our digestive and respiratory system but it also affects the main system of human body that is the reproductive system. Alcoholic males have been reported of testicular atrophy, impotency and gynecomastia.
Fetal alcohol syndrome: Those women who drink need to be more conscious as alcohol may not only affect their body but it will also have negative impact on their fetus. Experts are of the opinion that taking alcohol during pregnancy can leads to mental retardation, facial deformity and neurological problems.
